Lakhimpur Telahi Kamalabaria College was established on the 22nd of August'1977, is situated at Azad at a distance of 8 km from Lakhimpur town. Prior to the establishment of this august institution the students of this poor agrarian economically backward locality had to face an uphill task for attaining higher education due to lack of proper communication and economic backwardness. So the keen educationist, social workers and visionaries of the locality took initiative with the support of the inhabitants of the area to start an institution of higher education to fulfil the demands of the local people. Then it was the only institution of higher education situated at Azad surrounded by a huge population of nearly sixty thousand people mostly belonging to the SC., ST, M.O.B.C and other backward classes. The missionary zeal and unflinching endeavour of some prominent local people and wholehearted devotion of the teachers and the management has brought the college to its present state of dignity.
The Arts stream was brought under deficit grant-in-aid system in 1987and subsequently provincialized under the college provincialisation act, 2005. The college is permanently affiliated to Dibrugarh University and registered under 2f and 12b of UGC act 1956.
In order to cope up with the demands of the present age, the science stream was started in 1994 with a view of imparting science education to the local youths in spite of economic paucity of the institution. The science stream offers both two years Higher Secondary course and 3years B.Sc. course with major in Botany, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Zoology. The Science stream was provincialized under Assam Venture Institution Provincialisation Act, 2010.
